about

I wrote We Play for the change-makers of past, present and future. This song was born when my friend Melanie Hope asked me to write a song that could be used in her documentary, Grounders, which tells the story of the Prospect Park Women's Softball League.

There wasn't always a space for women to play ball. We had to fight for that space, like we've had to fight for a lot of other things. The activists that came before us worked their entire lives to get us to where we are right now. And the ones of tomorrow will take us where we're going.

I thought it appropriate to release the song a day before early in-person voting kicks off in my home state of New York (10/24) and 4 days before the cut-off for requesting an absentee ballot (10/27).

I play music and I play softball for many of the same reasons. They both give me a safe place to escape, be myself and connect with others - a space to hone my skills and build my confidence. When I play music and softball, I honor those who paved the way and showed me I could do it too. That cycle is important to me and that's a motivating factor in why I decided to write this song for Mel.

Grounders is getting close to completion and with any luck you'll catch my song in the documentary.

I hope you love it.

lyrics

To the ones who came before
and saw what change should come
you toiled with grace
to arrive at this place
right where we belong

Tore down walls
demanded space
a toast, my thanks & praise
foundation is laid
you showed us the way
for you, with love
we play

To the ones still waiting on deck
your time will surely come
with ambition & strength
our collective embrace
no telling who you'll become

On a mission so pure
and a mission so plain
a toast, my thanks & praise
there's so much left to do
now we're counting on you
for you, with love
we play
